BROWNWOOD, Texas- The Howard Payne university women's soccer team gave Concordia university Texas their first conference loss, defeating the tornados 2-1 on Thursday afternoon.
Kendra Cecil scored the game winning goal on a corner kick in the 87th minute of the match.
Lexi De La Cruz scored the first goal of the afternoon in the 14th minute on an assist from Carrie Gerdes.
The Lady Jacket defense held the Tornados until the 84th minute, when Concordia scored to tie the match.
In the 87th minute, the Yellow Jackets retook the lead after Kendra Cecil fired a corner-kick into the back of the net.
HPU was able to old off CTX for the remainder of the match to secure their third conference victory of the season.
Delaney Castor played all 90 minutes in goal for Howard Payne, allowed one goal, and recorded five saves.
The Lady Jackets are off to their best start in program history with an overall record of 8-3 and 3-1 in conference play The Tornados fall to 5-5 overall and 4-1 in conference play.
Howard Payne will play Mary Hardin-Baylor at Citizen's National Bank Soccer Field in Brownwood, Texas on Saturday, Oct. 9th, at 1:00 PM.
