Jake Parker recorded a milestone and
Blake Phipps set a record in the Yellow Jackets 49-21 victory over the Austin College Roos Saturday afternoon on senior day. The Yellow Jackets finish the season at 7-3 overall and 6-3 in American Southwest Conference action; their best record since 2005.
HPU's
Jake Parker surpassed 1,000 yards receiving for the season (1,113) recording seven catches for 162 yards and two touchdowns. Parker did a little bit of everything in the game with three carries for 29 yards, one pass for five yards, three punt returns for 15 yards, one kick return for 21 yards, and one interception and return for 50 yards.
Blake Phipps set the HPU season record for point after makes with 46 after going 7 for 7 versus the Roos. The previous record with held by Drew McMaster with 43 in 2002.
Landon McKinney led the Yellow Jackets offense that posted 531 total yards. McKinney was 18 of 22 passing for 397 yards and five TDs.Â
Nick Infante was 5 for 10 passing for 66 yards. With the five passing TDs, the Yellow Jackets broke the team record for TD passes in a season with 36. The previous record was set in 2002 with 33.
HPU had three receivers record over 100 yards in the game, Parker with seven catches for 162 yards,
Otis Lanier with four catches for 140 yards with two TDs, and
Hunter Cheek with seven catches for 103 yards.
Kyle Bell led the Jackets defense with 10 tackles, four solo.
Peyton Lowe was the anchor for the defense with nine tackles (1.5 for loss), one sack, and one pass breakup.
Byron Clark recorded an interception with a 36 yard return for a TD for HPU.
It was all Yellow Jackets to start the game with
Landon McKinney finding Ortis Lanier on the first play from scrimmage, a 79 yard TD pass just seconds into the game. Then, HPU's
Byron Clark picked off an Austin College pass on their third play from scrimmage and returned it 36 yards for the TD.
HPU added two more scores in the second quarter, a 39 yard Lanier reception from McKinney and Parker 61 yard TD pass from McKinney. With the Jackets leading 28-0 at the half, Parker added another TD reception in the third quarter before Austin College was able to get on the scoreboard.
The Jackets scored twice in the fourth quarter on a 10 yard TD reception by
Collyn Shipley and a one yard run by
Peter McFarlin.
Howard Payne ends the season at 7-3 overall and 6-3 in league play. Austin College season ends at 1-8 overall and 1-8 in league action.
