BROWNWOOD, Texas - The Howard Payne University baseball team finished its double header with the University of Texas at Dallas with a 4-3 walk-off victory Saturday afternoon at Don Shepard Park. Yellow Jackets lost game one 10-4.
Highlight of the Day - HPU's
Trevor Fletcher tripled to left center with the bases loaded scoring three runs and gave the Yellow Jackets the walk-off win in game two of the double header.
Game One
Howard Payne jumped out to an early 2-0 lead scoring on a throwing error by the pitcher allowed two base runners to come home. In the fourth,
Nolyn Box would score on a wild pitch and a
Derek Gifford solo home run in the seventh rounded out the Yellow Jacket scoring in the 10-4 UT Dallas final.
Chandler Paul recorded the loss in the start for the Jackets going 4.2 innings and allowing seven runs on seven hits. Paul walked eight and struckout five. Landon Blass and
Dean Evans saw time in relief.
HPU's
Stephen Prewitt finished the game 3-for-3 at the plate with one RBI.Â
Game Two
The Yellow Jackets tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the seventh when
Joey Villarreal singled through the left side to bring home
Jonathan McKay.
After single runs by UT Dallas in the top of the eighth and ninth innings, it was back to back singles and a UTD fielding error loaded the bases for the Jackets in the bottom of the ninth. With a
Nolyn Box strikeout, it was
Trevor Fletcher's time at the plate for the triple and the walk-off victory.
Joey Villarreal was 3-for-5 at the plate for HPU and
David Berzins was 3-for-4 in game to of the double header,
Xavier Haines recorded the victory in relief throwing the final 2.0 innings, striking out three.
Kyle Purdes was solid in the start going 7.0 innings and striking out six.
Howard Payne stands at 1-4 overall and 1-2 in American Southwest Conference action. UT Dallas is now 2-1 overall and 2-1 in league play. The Yellow Jackets will be on the road next weekend for a conference series at the University of the Ozarks on March 5th and 6th.
