BROWNWOOD, Texas- The Howard Payne University volleyball team lost both games in a doubleheader against Concordia University Texas 3-0 and 3-0 on Saturday evening in the Brownwood Coliseum.
Game One
The first set was a close battle between the Lady Jackets and the Tornadoes. Howard Payne went on a 5-0 run to take a three-point lead making the score 13-10. The score was tied 20-20 when the Tornadoes went on a late 4-0 run to gain a four-point advantage over the Lady Jackets. Howard Payne added one more point before dropping the set 25-21.
The Lady Jackets got off to a rocky start in the second set, finding themselves down 12-8. HPU then went on a 5-0 run to take the one-point lead making the score 13-12. The score was tied 17-17 when the Tornadoes put together a 6-0 run to pull away from the Lady Jackets. The final score was 25-21.
The closest set of the night came in set three on the first game. The Lady Jackets were down 15-9 when they went on a 7-1 run to get themselves back in the set making the score 17-16. Howard Payne was up 22-21 when Concordia went on a 3-0 run. The Lady Jackets dropped the set 25-23.
Mya Ross led the Lady Jacks with 10 kills.
Riley Britain had eight assists followed by
Mitsue Rodriguez with seven.
Chloe Pryor recorded 13 digs.
Sarah Ghormley had 14 kills and 16 digs for the Tornadoes. Georgia Quiroz recorded 29 assists and 16 digs.
Game Two
The Lady Jackets dropped three straight sets by scores of 25-15, 25-20, and 25-10.
The first set started out close but the Lady Jackets were unable to stop a late run by the Tornadoes. The second set was the closest of the match. Howard Payne trailed 18-13 when they went on a 7-3 run to within one point of Concordia.
The Tornadoes went on a 4-0 run to win the set. The Lady Jackets were unable to find their rhythm in the third and dropped the set and the match.
Mitsue Rodriguez led Howard Payne with six kills.
Riley Britain had 12 assists.
Mya Ross recorded eight digs followed by
Daisy Flores with seven.
Sarah Ghormley had 13 kills for Concordia. Georgia Quiroz recorded 32 assists and Laina DeLeon had 17 digs.
The Lady Jackets fall to 2-6 on the season and 0-6 in the American Southwest Conference. Concordia moves to 2-0 on the season and 2-0 in conference play. The volleyball team will be at home on Monday, March second to take on Sul Ross State starting at 5 pm.
