ABILENE, Texas- The Howard Payne University softball team defeated the University of St. Thomas by a score of 12-3 on Thursday afternoon.
The Lady Jackets got off to a hot start, scoring three runs in the first inning.
Alexis Sullivan grounded out to score Kylie Persons. HPU scored their second run on a
Tori Muro single and their third on a
Ragen Noriega single.
St. Thomas tied the game, scoring three runs in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game.
The Lady Jackets had a big sixth inning, scoring six runs to take a 9-3 lead over the Celts. HPU scored three more runs in the seventh inning to come away with the 12-3 victory.
The Lady Jackets outhit the Celts 11-5, which included a double from
Deandra Longoria.
Alexis Sullivan had four RBI.
Tia Campos was the starting pitcher for the Lady Jackets, allowing three runs on five hits.
Bree Cason came in for Campos in the fourth inning. Cason allowed zero runs on zero hits and got the win.Â
With today's win, Howard Payne improves to 8-3 overall and 4-2 in conference play. St. Thomas falls to 6-6 on the season. The two teams will play each other in a double-header Friday, March 12th starting at 12 pm.
