ALPINE, Texas- The Howard Payne University volleyball team took on Sul Ross State in a double-header and lost 3-0 and 3-1 Tuesday afternoon.
Game One
Howard Payne got off to a hot start and took an early 4-1 lead. Sul Ross found their rhythm and took a five-point 14-9 lead. The Lady Jackets responded with an 8-2 run to take a one-point lead. The Lobos went on an 8-2 run of their own to defeat the Jackets 25-19.
The Lady Jackets were unable to find their footing, dropping the next two sets 25-13 and 25-15.
Fabianna Bennett led the Lady Jackets with seven kills. Leading Howard Payne in assists was
Riley Britain with 10. Britain also led in digs with eight, followed by
Chloe Pryor with eight and
Daisy Flores with seven.
Annika Canaba led Sul Ross with 11 kills and 12 digs. Vivian Moya added 12 assists.
Game Two
The Lady Jackets got off to a rocky start, dropping the first two sets 25-13 and 25-20.Â
HPU found a spark in the third set, going on a 4-0 run to start. Howard Payne trailed 17-15 when they went on 10-2 run to win 25-19.
The Lady Jackets lost the last set 25-16.
Maya Ross led Howard Payne with 13 kills, four blocks, and five digs. Â
Riley Britain had 21 assists.
Annika Canaba led Sul Ross with 26 kills. Vivian Moya added 29 assists.
Howard Payne falls to 3-11 overall and 0-10 in conference play. Sul Ross improves to 5-2 overall and 5-2 in the conference.
The Lady Jackets will play Concordia in a double-header on March 13th in Austin, Texas, starting at 1 pm.
