COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado - The Howard Payne University volleyball team wrapped up the Spike It Up tournament hosted by Colorado College this afternoon with a 3-2 loss to Occidental College and a 3-2 loss to Belhaven University to go 1-3 on the weekend.
Amaya Marshall highlighted the day with 28 total kills. Riley Brittain had 54 total assists.
Game OneÂ
The Lady Jackets got off to a rocky start in the first game, dropping the first two sets 25-20 and 25-18. However, HPU went on to win the following two sets, 25-20 and 25-22, to keep the match going.
The fifth set was very close, with the Lady Jackets leading most of the way. The final score was 15-13.
Mya Ross had a game-high 17 kills for the Lady Jackets, followed by
Mitsue Rodriguez with 16 kills and
Amaya Marshall with 14. Riley Brittain had 30 assists, followed by
Kaitlyn Elsten with 23.
Sydney Sullivan had 30 digs.
Skye Garcia and Gieselle Gatewood had 13 kills for Occidental College. Katherine Chodaczek had a game-high 44 assists.
Game Two
The Lady Jackets dropped the first set 25-16 but bounced back to take the second set 25-23. Belhaven took the third set 25-22 to go up 2-1. Howard Payne forced a fifth set with a 25-23 win in the fourth set.
The Blazers won the fifth set 15-11 to claim the victory.
Amaya Marshall led the Lady Jackets with a game-high 14 kills, followed by
Mya Ross with nine and
Mitsue Rodriguez with eight.
Abbie Knepper had six blocks, followed by
Mya Ross with four and
Amaya Marshall with three. Riley Brittain had 24 assists, and
Holland Hancock had 28 digs.
Sarah Scott had 12 kills for the Blazers, and Grace Laukhuf had 25 assists.
Mya Ross was named to the 2021 Spike it up Classic all-tournament team.
The Lady Jackets will play the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor on Tuesday, Sept. 14th, at the Brownwood Coliseum in Brownwood, Texas.
