Lady Jackets Drop Conference Game To War Hawks

ABILENE, Texas – A big fourth quarter by McMurry University leads to an 88-77 conference loss for the Howard Payne University women's basketball Thursday evening at Kimbrell Arena.

It was Howard Payne committing 20 second half turnovers and McMurry shooting over 70% from the field in the final period that led to an 88-77 final for McMurry.

In was a clean game for both teams in the first half each shooting over 50% from the field. With a 30-foot three-point bucket at the buzzer by HPU's Amanda Turpin, the Lady Jackets led 43-38 at the halftime break.

Shooting over 72% from the field in the final quarter, the War Hawks would outscore the Lady Jackets 30-19 to secure the 88-77 final. 

With HPU getting into foul trouble in the final period, McMurry went on to shoot more free-throws in the fourth (14 of 22 in the 4th) than HPU did all game (11 of 14 for the game).

The Lady Jackets were led by Amanda Turpin with 17 points on 5 of 6 three-point shooting. Bria Neal finished with 13 points, Lily Janek had 12 points, and Delaney Ingram added 10 points.

McMurry was led Destiny Matthews with 24 points and Valery Alvarado with 20 points

Howard Payne is now 4-20 overall and 2-17 in American Southwest Conference action. McMurry stands at 3-19 overall and 2-15 in league play. The Lady Jackets will finish out the 2020 season this Saturday at Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene, Texas. It will be a 1:00 pm tip-off.
