Lady Jackets Lose Late Lead Versus Cowgirls

BROWNWOOD, TEXAS – The Howard Payne University softball team battled to the end in the series finale against Hardin-Simmons University today 9-7.  

With Howard Payne holding a 7-6 lead going into the final inning Hardin-Simmons scored three runs in the top of the inning to take the game 9-7.

The Cowgirls got on the board first in the game, scoring 3 runs in the 2nd inning giving them a 3-0 lead. 

With bases loaded for the Lady Jackets in the bottom of the inning, a single from Maddison Cason put HPU on the scoreboard. 3-1 HSU 

After HSU added a run in the top of the fourth, the Lady Jackets recorded 6 runs in the bottom of the inning with hits from Kiley Persons, Madison Cason, Alexia Perkkio, Elaine Gonzalez, Samantha Cantu, and Tori Muro.  

The Cowgirls were able to add two more runs in the 5th making it a close game, 7-6.  

Hardin-Simmons scored three more runs in the 7th inning and the Lady Jackets were unable to answer, giving HPU the loss 9-7.  

Kiley Persons went 3-for-4 on the day with 1 RBI and Samantha Cantu followed with a 2-for-4 outing.

Bree Cason pitched 5.0 innings for the Lady Jackets allowing six runs on ten hits and striking out four.  Isabella Buckley threw the final 2.0 innings allowing three runs on four hits.  

The Lady Jackets will face East Texas Baptist University for the next series in Marshall, Texas with a double-header on Friday February 25th, and a single on Saturday starting at 12 noon.
