BROWNWOOD, Texas - The Howard Payne University baseball team fell 7-1 and 8-3 in a conference double-header versus East Texas Baptist University Sunday afternoon at Don Shepard Park.
Game One
ETBUÂ claimed game one 7-1 outhitting the Jackets 8-2. HPU would strand eight runners in the game.
HPU's only run came in the second when a
Noah Coronado single down the left line scored
Rylee McGee.
Coronado led the Yellow Jackets going 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI.Â
Merek Hawthorne also recorded two hits going 2-for-2 at the plate.
Kyle Purdes got the loss in the start allowing seven runs on eight hits and striking out four in 6.0 innings of work.
Nicholas Richards threw the final frame of the seven inning game striking out one.
Game Two
The Yellow Jackets recorded 11 hits as a team in game two but stranded nine runners in the 8-3 ETBU final.
HPU tied the game at 1-1 in the second on a
RJ Roberts double to score
Joey Villarreal. In the sixth, Hawthorne scored on a wild pitch and in the eighth and a
Derek Gifford single would bring home
RJ Roberts.
Derek Gifford led the Jackets going 3-for-4 at the plate with an RBI.
Joey Villarreal and
RJ Roberts both finished 2-for-5 at the plate, each had a double.
Chandler Paul went 4.1 innings in the start for the Jackets allowing three runs on six hits and striking out four.Â
D'Andrey Silva threw 2.0 innings in relief.
Dean Evans and Landon Blass each saw 1.1 innings of action each striking out one.
Howard Payne is now 2-7 overall and 1-7 in American Southwest Conference play. ETBU stands at 10-2 overall and 8-0 in league play. The two teams will finish out their weekend conference series on Monday with a single game starting at 1:00 pm.
