BROWNWOOD, Texas - The Howard Payne University football team recorded four touchdown passes in a 33-21 conference win over East Texas Baptist Saturday afternoon at Gordon Wood Stadium.
Despite being sacked six times by the East Texas Baptist defense, the Howard Payne offense came through and was able to score four passing TDs and one rushing in the game.
HPU receivers
Otis Lanier and
Jordan Carroll posted 149 and 152 yards receiving respectively with each hauling in two TD passes from HPU QB
Landon McKinney.
McKinney was 18 of 29 passing for 377 yards, four TDs and one interception.
Tauren Bradley led the rushing game with 11 carries for 38 yards and one touchdown.
KC Cornelious led the HPU defense with eight total tackles, five solo and 1.5 for loss.
James Jakubowski and
Brevin Wilson each recorded a sack and Jakubowski would also bragged the only HPU interception of the game.
Byron Clark had two pass breakups.
The Jackets jumped out to an early led with touchdown receptions from
Otis Lanier (27 yrds) and
Jordan Carroll (21 yrds) in the first quarter. HPU would extend its lead to 19-0 after a
Tauren Bradley 3-yard TD run with 11:26 left in the second quarter.
With the Jackets leading 19-0 at the break, the Tigers would pull to within five, 19-14, after two third quarter TD passes. But
Jordan Carroll's second TD reception of the game with 2:08 left in the third pushed the Jacket lead back to 26-14.
With 7:21 left in the game,
Otis Lanier hauled in his second TD grab from McKinney to give the Jackets a 33-21 lead and eventual win.
Howard Payne is now 3-1 overall and 2-0 in American Southwest Conference play. ETBU stands at 1-2 overall and 1-1 in league action. The Yellow Jackets will play next on the road at Sul Ross State in Alpine, Texas on Oct. 1st. It will be a 1:00 pm start time.
