ALPINE, Texas - The Howard Payne University football team had a shot at the endzone as time expired to win the game but fell 47-42 to Sul Ross State University Saturday afternoon. HPU's Landon McKinney broke the HPU record for career passing completions, now with 659.

Down by 47-42 with :32 second left in the game, the Yellow Jackets drove down to the Sul Ross State 34-yard line with 19 second remaining. Howard Payne took two shots at the endzone but both fell incomplete and Sul Ross claimed the non-conference game 47-42.

Down by 10 points in the fourth quarter, the Yellow Jackets took the lead on a Sam Sims 15-yard TD reception and a Jordan Carroll 5-yard TD catch it was 42-41 with 5:52 left in the game. The Lobos scored again but missed their two-point conversion to make the score 47-42.

HPU was led by Landon McKinney going 34 of 56 for 471 yards and four TDs with no interceptions. McKinney now holds the school record for career passing completions with 659, the previous record of 653 was held by Scott Lincher (1991-1994).

Blessing Ngene had 55 yards rushing on 12 carries and one TD. Gus Charles finished with seven catches for 119 yards, Casey Dufner had five catches for 114 yards, Jordan Carroll added five catches for 85 yards and two touchdowns.

Jessie Paris and KJ Kelley led the Yellow Jacket defense. Paris finished with 12 tackles and Kelley had 11 tackles, a forced fumble and two pass breakups.

The Yellow Jackets now stand at 6-3 overall on the year and Sul Ross improves to 4-5 overall. The Yellow Jackets will finish out the regular season next week at home versus the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor. It will be a 1:00 pm kickoff and seniors will be recognized before the game.
