BROWNWOOD, TEXAS – This afternoon, the Howard Payne Yellow Jackets dropped today's game 16-4 versus Hardin-Simmons University.
Hardin-Simmons was able to get on the board early in the game with one run in the second inning, five in the third, one in the fourth, and four in the fifth.
In the bottom of the sixth, HPU's
Kayden Kelley hit a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Will Burford.
The Yellow Jackets scored two more runs in the seventh inning. The first run was scored by Sam Lampson on a hit by
Taylor Griner to third base.
Joey Villarreal then grounded out to short stop, bringing home
Carson Wert.
HPU scored their last run in the bottom of the eighth.
Carson Wert doubled down the left field line to bring in
Luke Brock for the run, making the final score 16-4.
Howard Payne's
Seth Bowman led the team in hits with three total.
Pitching 4.0 innings,
Brendan Read led the team with a total of five strikeouts on the game.
Kyle Ivy followed with four strikeouts and allowed no runs while pitching 2.1 innings.
The Yellow Jackets are now 11-13 on the season and 5-8 in conference play. Back at Don Shepard Park, the Jackets will play games two and three of the HSU series tomorrow, April 1
st, at 1:00 pm and 4:00 pm.
