BROWNWOOD, TEXAS – The Howard Payne Yellow Jackets split today's double header versus Hardin-Simmons University, HSU winning the first game 12-4, and HPU winning the second game 3-1.
Game 1
HSU started off the game in the top of the first with two runs. The Yellow Jackets responded with a run scored by
Noah Coronado, off of a hit singled to right field by
Kayden Kelley, making the score 2-1 HSU in the bottom of the first.
The Cowboys were able to score three more runs in the top of the second.
In the bottom of the second, HPU's Will Burford singled through the left side, bringing in
Kelby Coburn for the run.
Hardin-Simmons scored three in the fourth inning, and four in the sixth.
Howard Payne was able to get their last two runs in the bottom of the sixth.
Seth Bowman singled to right field, bringing home Will Burford and
Joey Villarreal. The final score was 12-4, Hardin-Simmons taking the win.
HPU's Will Burford led the team with three hits and one RBI. Today's starting pitcher for the Jackets was
Brayden Ferrie, pitching for 4.0 innings. He had a season high of seven strikeouts on the game.
Game 2
The Jackets were on the board early in the game, scoring three runs in the bottom of the second inning.
The first run was scored by Sam Lampson off of a single to right field by
Carson Wert.
Noah Coronado then hit a single, bringing home
Carson Wert and
Kelby Coburn, making the score 3-0.
The Cowboys weren't able to score until the top of the fifth, where they scored one run. This being the last run of the game, the final score was 3-1 HPU.
Gary Blair, starting pitcher for Howard Payne, will take today's win; pitching 7.0 innings. Blair only allowed one run and had three strikeouts.
Bryson Adare with the save, pitching 2.0 innings, allowing no runs and had one strikeout.
In game two,
Carson Wert led the team in hits with three, and had one RBI.
The Yellow Jackets are now 12-14 on the season and 6-9 in conference. They will compete against UT Dallas in Richardson, Texas this upcoming Thursday, April 6th at 2:00 pm.
