BROWNWOOD, TX --The Howard Payne University volleyball team won the first two sets, but couldn't hold on and fell in five sets (25-21, 25-22, 23-25, 19-25, 17-19) to the Dallas Crusaders Tuesday, September 19th at the Brownwood Coliseum.

The non-conference loss dropped Howard Payne to 6-3 on the season.

The Lady Jackets were led by a double-double from Makenzie Weddel, who registered 16 kills and 11 digs on the day. Rylee Spencer also added 20 kills to help the offense. On the defensive end, Brylee Awbrey chipped in with 24 digs to go with two blocks from Rylee McAlexander.

How It Happened

SET 1 | The Lady Jackets grabbed the first set 25-21 helped by a solid showing on the attacking side. Howard Payne registered a .333 attack percentage with 17 kills in the set victory. After the lead changed hands one time, the Lady Jackets took control for good at 20-19 and rode that advantage to victory.

SET 2 | Howard Payne built on a set-one win by earning a 25-22 victory in the second set. The Lady Jackets survived a back-and-forth set to win in a stanza that featured six lead changes and was tied 15 times. Neither team led by more than three points along the way.

SET 3 | Howard Payne couldn't end the match in a sweep, dropping the third set to make their lead two sets to one in the match. The Lady Jackets battled back from a seven-point hole at 18-11, but Dallas hung on to win the set 25-23.

SET 4 | Howard Payne then dropped their second straight set 25-19 to brind the match level at two sets apiece. The Lady Jackets trailed by as many as six points as Dallas grabbed the advantage for good at 7-6 and Howard Payne wasn't able to recover in a set that was tied up six times before the Crusaders took over.

SET 5 | Howard Payne grabbed a 2-0 set lead, but couldn't take another set on their way to losing the match. The Lady Jackets fell in a back-and-forth set five, losing in a stanza that featured eight lead changes and was tied 11 times. Neither team led by more than three points in the set.

The Lady Jackets will be back at home this weekend taking on LeTourneau University Friday, September 22nd at 6:00 PM and UT Dallas Saturday, September 23rd at 3:00 PM.
