ABILENE, Texas --The Howard Payne University volleyball team lost to the Schreiner University Mountaineers in five sets (18-25, 25-17, 22-25, 25-19, 9-15) Saturday at Mabee Complex.
The non-conference loss dropped Howard Payne to 9-9 overall on the season.
The Yellow Jackets were led by a double-double from Tara Bennett, who registered 20 kills and 15 digs on the day. Brylee Awbrey also added seven kills to help the offense. On the defensive end, Kassidy Johnson chipped in for with 24 digs to go with four blocks from Awbrey.

How It Happened
SET 1 | The Yellow Jackets found themselves in an early hole, losing a tough first set 25-18. Howard Payne trailed by as many as 10 points as Schreiner grabbed the advantage for good at 6-5 in a set that was tied up just once before the Mountaineers took control.
SET 2 | Howard Payne responded to pick up a 25-17 victory in set two, evening the match at one set apiece. The Yellow Jackets never trailed by more than five points and grabbed the advantage for good at 8-7 in a set that had just one lead change before Howard Payne took over the lead. The Yellow Jackets racked up 19 kills over the course of the set.
SET 3 | Schreiner grabbed a 2-1 match lead after taking down the Yellow Jackets in the third set. The Yellow Jackets came up short by the score of 25-22. Howard Payne trailed by as many as six points as Schreiner grabbed the advantage for good at 2-1 in a set that was tied up three times before the Mountaineers took over the lead.
SET 4 | Howard Payne then responded to secure the fourth set 25-19 to force a fifth set. The Yellow Jackets trailed by as many as six points, but took the lead for good at 13-12 in a set that had just one lead change before the Yellow Jackets took over the lead. Howard Payne also supplemented their offense with three aces in the set.
SET 5 | Howard Payne came up short in a back-and-forth match, winning the second and fourth sets, but losing the first, third and fifth, which they dropped by the score of 15-9, to fall in the match. The Yellow Jackets fell behind on the first point and never took the lead.
The Lady Jackets will play next on Tuesday in Abilene versus McMurry University at 6:00 pm.
