ABILENE, Texas -- Howard Payne University's Tara Bennett and Makenzie Weddel both secured double-doubles to help lead the Lady Jacket volleyball team to a 3-2 victory (17-25, 25-20, 21-25, 25-13, 15-10) over the McMurry University War Hawks Tuesday on the road at Kimbrell Arena.
The non-conference victory improved the Yellow Jackets' overall record to 10-9 on the season.
The Yellow Jackets were led by double-doubles from both Weddel, who had 20 kills and 25 digs, and Bennett, who had 20 kills and 15 digs. Brylee Awbrey also added eight kills to help the offense. On the defensive end, Kassidy Johnson chipped in for with 22 digs to go with two blocks from Awbrey.

How It Happened
SET 1 | The Yellow Jackets found themselves in an early deficit, dropping a tough first set 25-17. Howard Payne trailed by as many as eight points as McMurry grabbed the advantage for good at 4-3 in a set that was tied up three times before the War Hawks took control.
SET 2 | Howard Payne rallied after dropping the first set to take the second set 25-20, tying the match at 1-1. The Yellow Jackets never trailed by more than five points and grabbed the advantage for good at 17-16 in a set that featured 11 ties and six lead changes.
SET 3 | McMurry went up 2-1 after taking down the Yellow Jackets in the third set. The Yellow Jackets came up short by the score of 25-21. McMurry grabbed the advantage for good at 20-19 in a set that was tied up 11 times before the War Hawks took over in the second half of the stanza.
SET 4 | Howard Payne then responded to secure set four 25-13 to force a fifth set. The Yellow Jackets took control of the set at 3-2 and never looked back. Howard Payne led by 13 points at 24-11 before closing out the stanza, totaling 15 kills in the set. Howard Payne also supplemented their offense with four aces in the set.
SET 5 | Down two sets to one, Howard Payne fired back to win sets four and five, culminating in a 15-10 fifth-set victory, to take the match 3-2. The Yellow Jackets grabbed control of the set-five lead at 3-2 and held it the rest of the way. Howard Payne led by as many as six points at 12-6 before closing out the set, totaling nine kills along the way.
The Lady Jackets will play next on Friday in Longview, Texas versus LeTourneau University at 6:00 pm.
