Yellow Jackets drop 3-1 match to East Texas Baptist

MARSHALL, TX --The Howard Payne volleyball team fell Saturday as the East Texas Baptist Tigers posted a 3-1 (17-25, 21-25, 25-23, 16-25) win on the road at the Ornelas Gymnasium.

The loss dropped Howard Payne's record to 11-10 overall and 1-7 in ASC action.

The Yellow Jackets were led by a double-double from Tara Bennett, who registered 13 kills and 11 digs on the day. Makenzie Weddel also added 15 kills to help the attack. On the defensive end, Kassidy Johnson chipped in for with 19 digs to go with four blocks from Rylee McAlexander.

How It Happened

SET 1 | The Yellow Jackets fell behind early, dropping a tough first set 25-17. Howard Payne trailed by as many as eight points as East Texas Baptist never gave up the lead in a set that was notted up three times before the Tigers took control.

SET 2 | Howard Payne lost the second set 25-21, digging a 2-0 deficit in the match. The Yellow Jackets fell behind on the first point and never clawed back into the lead before dropping the set.

SET 3 | Howard Payne avoided a sweep after a win in set three to make it a 2-1 match. The Yellow Jackets survived a back-and-forth set to win 25-23 in a stanza that featured six lead changes and was tied 11 times. Neither team opened up a lead of more than four points along the way.

SET 4 | Howard Payne couldn't keep the momentum and fell in the fourth set 25-16 to drop the match. The Yellow Jackets lost the first point and fought from behind the rest of the way before losing the set.

The Lady Jackets will come back home to face the University of the Southwest this Tuesday at 5 pm.
