KERRVILLE, Texas --The Howard Payne University women's basketball team took a 56-49 lead into the fourth quarter, but could not hang on and fell 72-70 to the Schreiner University Mountaineers on the road Friday.
The Yellow Jackets (0-1) had two players score in double figures, led by Taysie Trejo, who had 21 points and three steals. Jazlyn Braithwaite tacked on 18 points and six rebounds and Kiana Henning added eight points and two steals.
The Howard Payne offense was strong from deep, knocking down 11 threes on 28 attempts. Trejo hit five treys for the Yellow Jackets in the contest.
The Howard Payne defense was effective at taking away the basketball in Friday's game, forcing 21 Schreiner turnovers while committing 19. Those takeaways turned into 24 points on the other end of the floor. Trejo's three steals led the way individually for the Yellow Jackets.
How It Happened
After playing to a 14-14 tie early in the game, Howard Payne went on a 5-0 run with 2:34 left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from Trejo, to take a 19-14 lead. The Yellow Jackets then maintained that lead and entered the quarter break with a 22-17 advantage. Howard Payne relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down four shots to account for 12 of its 22 points.
Howard Payne kept its first quarter lead intact before going on a 5-0 run starting at the 45 seconds mark in the second period, highlighted by a three from Trejo, to increase its lead to 38-31, a score that would hold until halftime. Howard Payne forced eight Schreiner turnovers in the period and turned them into 10 points.
Howard Payne continued to preserve its halftime lead before going on an 8-0 run, punctuated by a three from Trejo, to expand its lead further to 56-46 with 1:06 to go in the third. Before the conclusion of the third period, the Mountaineers had cut into that lead somewhat, but the Yellow Jackets still entered the fourth quarter with a 56-49 edge. Howard Payne knocked down four three-pointers in the quarter to score 12 of its 18 total points.
Schreiner proceeded to take a 62-60 lead before Howard Payne went on a 6-0 run to seize a 66-62 lead with 4:16 to go in the contest. Schreiner re-asserted control, outscoring the Yellow Jackets 10-4 the rest of the way to hand Howard Payne the 72-70 loss. Howard Payne took advantage of four Schreiner turnovers in the quarter, scoring six points off of those takeaways.
