ABILENE, Texas --The Howard Payne women's basketball team held McMurry to just 18.2 percent from 3-point range in a 4-for-22 shooting performance, but fell 68-49 to the War Hawks on the road Friday.
The Yellow Jackets (3-7) had two players score in double figures, led by Madison Clay, who had 14 points. Caitlyn Panuco tacked on 12 points and eight rebounds and Azaylee Santos added seven points and three steals.
Panuco pulled down two offensive rebounds to lead an offense that racked up second chance opportunities for Howard Payne, grabbing 12 boards and turning them into eight second chance points.
Howard Payne's defense held McMurry to only 18.2 percent shooting from beyond the arc.
How It Happened
Howard Payne struggled out of the gate, falling behind 16-8 at the end of the first quarter.
McMurry kept adding to that lead, building a 33-23 advantage before Howard Payne went on a 5-0 run to narrow its deficit to 33-28, a score that would hold until halftime.
Following halftime, Howard Payne kept the War Hawks from growing their lead before going on a 6-0 run to grab a 36-35 lead with 7:34 to go in the third. McMurry responded to seize a 56-41 lead entering the fourth quarter. Howard Payne turned one offensive rebounds into two second chance points on the way to scoring 13 total points in the quarter.
Howard Payne could not pull any closer in the fourth, losing by a final of 68-49. Howard Payne took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring four of its eight points in the paint.
