Howard Payne shoots 42.1 percent from deep in 68-49 win over Southwestern (TX)

BROWNWOOD, Texas --The Howard Payne women's basketball team knocked down 8-of-19 attempts from beyond the arc, shooting 42.1 percent from deep in a 68-49 victory against the Southwestern (TX) Pirates at home Monday.

The Yellow Jackets (4-9) had four players score in double figures, led by Kiana Henning, who had 15 points and three steals. Hannah Harmon tacked on 10 points off of the bench and Madison Clay chipped in as well with 10 points.

The Howard Payne offense was very productive from three point land, making eight threes on 19 attempts. Clay was the most prolific shooter for the Yellow Jackets, draining three treys in the contest.

The Howard Payne defense held Southwestern (TX) shooters to just 29.1 percent from the field, including 20.7 percent from three-point range. The Yellow Jackets also kept Adrianna McCoy to 2-of-13 shooting and five points in the game.

How It Happened

Howard Payne started off strong, putting together a 12-11 lead heading into the second quarter. Howard Payne relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down two shots to account for six of its 12 points.

Howard Payne built that first quarter lead to 19-16 before going on a 6-0 run starting at the 5:32 mark in the second period, highlighted by a three from Harmon, to increase its lead to 25-16. The Pirates cut into that lead, but the Yellow Jackets still enjoyed a 26-22 advantage heading into halftime. Howard Payne dominated in the paint, scoring eight of its 14 points close to the basket.

Howard Payne continued to preserve its halftime lead before going on an 11-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Kate Buchaman, to expand its lead further to 41-28 with 5:47 to go in the third. The Yellow Jackets held onto that lead for the rest of the frame and entered the fourth quarter with a 50-37 edge. Howard Payne played well near the basket, scoring 12 of its 24 points in the paint.

Howard Payne started tacking on points in the fourth almost immediately, going on a 7-0 run, finished off by Henning's three, to grow the lead to 57-37 with 6:59 to go in the contest. The Pirates narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Yellow Jackets still cruised the rest of the way for the 68-49 win. Howard Payne fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down three shots to account for nine of its 18 points.
