AUSTIN, Texas --The Howard Payne women's basketball team came up short in an 82-49 loss to the Concordia (TX) Tornados on the road Thursday.
The Yellow Jackets (4-10) had two players score in double figures, led by Kiana Henning, who had 11 points and two steals. Caitlyn Panuco added 11 points and six rebounds and Tatum Walker added seven points.
The Howard Payne defense was effective at taking away the basketball in Thursday's game, forcing 17 Concordia (TX) turnovers. Those takeaways turned into 14 points on the offensive end of the floor. Madison Clay led the way individually for the Yellow Jackets with three steals.
How It Happened
Howard Payne struggled out of the gate, falling behind 24-7 at the end of the first quarter.
The Yellow Jackets continued to lose ground in the second quarter and faced a 50-21 halftime deficit.
After intermission, Howard Payne cut its deficit to 58-31 before going on a 5-0 run to trim its deficit to 58-36 with 1:49 to go in the third. Concordia (TX) countered and stretched its lead to 63-37 heading into the fourth. Howard Payne took advantage of four Concordia (TX) turnovers in the quarter, scoring four points off of takeaways.
Concordia (TX) kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 75-44 advantage before Howard Payne went on a 5-0 run, finished off by Kasey Bonner's layup, to shrink the deficit to 75-49 with 4:07 to go in the contest. Concordia (TX) responded and outscored the Yellow Jackets the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 82-49. Howard Payne fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down two shots to account for six of its 12 points.
