CLEBURNE, Texas -- The Howard Payne Yellow Jackets struggled on Tuesday, falling to the Austin Kangaroos 14-2 despite the efforts of Freddie Matthews, who went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI.
Grant Beaver (1-1) took the loss on the mound for Howard Payne (9-12). Bryant Chambers started the ballgame and went two shutout innings without allowing a hit, walking none and striking out two.
At the plate, the Yellow Jackets were led by Matthews, who went 2-for-3 on the day with a double and an RBI. Grant Pfaff put together a noteworthy performance at the dish as well, going 1-for-4 with a double and an RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Yellow Jackets put runs on the scoreboard first, starting the scoring in the third inning. Luke Brock came across to score the lone run of the inning for Howard Payne and get them on the board.
The Kangaroos then rallied to score six runs and take a 6-1 lead before the Yellow Jackets got back on the board in the fourth. Howard Payne pushed across a run on Matthews' two-out RBI double, which brought the score to 6-2 in favor of the Kangaroos. The Yellow Jackets were unable to get any closer, as Austin added eight runs to their tally on the way to a 14-2 final.
