Howard Payne University Names Nick Cantu Assistant Athletic Director for External Engagement

BROWNWOOD, Texas – Howard Payne University has announced the hiring of Nick Cantu as its new Assistant Athletic Director for External Engagement. A San Angelo native and proud son of two Howard Payne alumni, Cantu brings a diverse background in sports information, broadcasting, marketing, and fan engagement to the Yellow Jacket athletic department.

Cantu joins HPU after serving as Director of Sports Information and Social Media at Howard College, where he led the school's athletic communications, social media strategy, and live broadcast operations. His career has also included experience as a sports broadcaster for KBST Media and the TSBN Sports Broadcasting Network, an adjunct faculty member at Hardin-Simmons University, and facilities and events coordinator at Sports Next Level in San Angelo.

In his new role, Cantu will oversee HPU's external relations, fan experience, marketing, sponsorships, community outreach, and athletic communications, serving as the department's primary liaison for media and public engagement. He will also lead the creative and digital media teams responsible for promoting the accomplishments of HPU's student-athletes and enhancing the overall game day experience.

Director of Athletics Adam Bright expressed his enthusiasm for the hire. "We're thrilled to welcome Nick to the Yellow Jacket family," Bright said. "His passion for connecting athletics to the community and his experience in multiple areas of sports communication make him a tremendous fit for this role. I'm excited to see the contagious energy and creativity he'll bring to HPU Athletics."

Cantu holds a Master of Science in Sport Administration from Southeastern Oklahoma State University and a Bachelor of Science in Sport Management from Texas Tech University. His parents, both Howard Payne graduates, instilled in him a deep appreciation for the university's mission and community.

"Being part of the university that means so much to my family and the Heartland area is an incredible honor," Cantu said. "I'm eager to build on the strong foundation here at HPU and help take the Yellow Jacket brand to new heights."

Cantu's leadership will play a key role in expanding fan engagement, increasing visibility across media platforms, and strengthening partnerships both on campus and throughout the region.

"HPU Athletics is growing in exciting ways," Bright added. "We're investing in people, programs, and experiences that reflect our mission and serve our student-athletes at the highest level. Nick will be an integral part of that progress in the months ahead."

"I'm looking forward to connecting with our alumni, students, and fans, and finding creative ways to tell the story of Howard Payne Athletics," Cantu said. "There's a lot of pride in being a Yellow Jacket, and I can't wait to share that with even more people."

With deep family roots in the Heartland and a lifelong passion for sports and community, Nick Cantu's addition marks another step forward in the continued growth of Howard Payne University Athletics.
