BROWNWOOD, Texas — Howard Payne University Athletics has begun construction on significant practice facility enhancements at the McCullough Athletic Center, including a new artificial turf practice field and new TifTuf natural grass practice fields that are expected to be completed prior to the start of the upcoming football season.
The project represents another major investment in the student-athlete experience and addresses a long-standing need for additional high-quality practice space for Howard Payne's athletic programs. Once completed, the new facilities will provide enhanced training opportunities for student-athletes while also creating versatile space that can serve the broader university community.
The practice field project is the latest in a series of facility enhancements across Howard Payne Athletics. Recent investments have included the completion of Phase One of The Hive student-athlete center, upgrades inside the Brownwood Coliseum, and the groundbreaking of a new tennis center. Together, these projects reflect the department's ongoing commitment to enhancing facilities and resources for current and future Yellow Jackets. The practice field project was made possible by a lead gift to the Yellow Jacket Club from Woody and Miki Martin.
"Miki and I are excited to be able to give to this project," said Woody Martin. "It was an immediate need that will change the ability of all our athletic teams to be able to practice and compete in all weather conditions. We look forward to seeing how God will use these fields for his Glory and His Purposes in the coming years."
In addition to supporting athletic practices and training sessions, the artificial turf field will provide opportunities for use by intramural sports, marching band rehearsals, camps, and other campus activities throughout the year.
"As we continue to advance Howard Payne Athletics, projects like this are critical to enhancing every aspect of the student-athlete experience," said
Adam Bright, Director of Athletics. "From facilities and equipment to coaching, support services, and competitive opportunities, we are committed to creating an environment where our student-athletes can thrive. These new practice fields will have an immediate impact on our programs and will benefit the entire university community."
The new TifTuf natural grass surfaces are designed to provide durable, high-quality practice areas capable of withstanding the demanding conditions of Central Texas while supporting multiple athletic programs throughout the year.
Bright said the project is another visible example of the positive momentum building throughout the department.
"There is tremendous excitement surrounding Howard Payne Athletics right now," Bright said. "Over the past year, we've seen significant progress across our department with the completion of Phase One of The Hive, the groundbreaking of our new tennis center, enhancements inside the Brownwood Coliseum, and now the addition of these new practice fields at the McCullough Athletic Center. These projects are all part of a larger commitment to providing a first-class experience for our student-athletes and creating an environment that positions our programs for long-term success. The momentum continues to build, and we're grateful for the many alumni, donors, and supporters who are helping make these investments possible."
Bright also expressed appreciation to the Woody and Miki Martin and the Yellow Jacket Club Board of Directors for its ongoing support and commitment to the department's vision.
"We are grateful for the leadership and dedication of Woody and Miki Martin and the Yellow Jacket Club," Bright said. "Their continued work in coming alongside Howard Payne Athletics is helping create opportunities that positively impact our student-athletes and strengthen the future of our programs. Their partnership and support are instrumental as we continue moving our department forward."
Brasher & Co. of Early, Texas, has begun construction on the new practice fields, with the project expected to be completed and ready for use prior to the start of the 2026 football season.
