BROWNWOOD, Texas – Howard Payne women's basketball improved to 2-0 in conference play with a 73-59 victory over Concordia University Texas Saturday at Brownwood Coliseum.
Howard Payne held Concordia Texas to just 34.8 percent (24-of-69) shooting from the floor. The Tornados would shot only 41.7 percent (5-of-12) from the free-throw line.
The Lady Jackets led by as much as 11 in the first half on a jumper by
Jessica Galaviz with 6:30 left. CTX would rally cut it to 33-28 at halftime.
Concordia then cut the deficit to two points in the first three minutes of the second period, but a 16-5 run by Howard Payne over the next seven minutes pushed the advantage back to double digits.
The Tornados were able to get within six, 63-57 on a layup with 4:08 remaining. However, the Lady Jackets answered again with a 10-2 spurt to close out the contest.
The Lady Jackets shot 52.7 percent (29-of-55) from the field en route to their second straight league victory. HPU also outrebounded CTX 44-35.
Danyel Bradley led Howard Payne with 21 points and five assists, while
Sarah Van Remmen chipped in with 16.
Jessica Galaviz grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds.
Presley McKethan added nine points and five assists.
CTX was led by Isis Johnson with 16 points. Ashlyn Ward and Emily Cullers added 13 and 10 points respectively.
Howard Payne is now 5-1 overall and 2-0 in ASC play. Concordia falls to 0-5 overall and 0-2 in conference. The Lady Jackets will play next on Dec.16th at home versus Hardin-Simmons University at 5:30 pm.
