Jackets Lose To UMHB

Colton Brown was 2-for-5 from the plate in the series opener vs UMHB

Box Score BROWNWOOD, Texas – The Howard Payne baseball team dropped their conference series opener with Mary Hardin-Baylor 13-3 Friday afternoon at Don Shepard Park.

It was a seven-run seventh inning for Mary Hardin-Baylor that put the game out of reach for Howard Payne.

Howard Payne scored in the first inning when Matthew Daniel had a sacrifice fly to right field to score Colton Brown. Brown had reached on a bunt single and was pushed over by a Joshua Martinez sac bunt and a passed ball.

Mary Hardin-Baylor then scored in the second and third innings to take a 4-1 lead. The Jackets then added single runs in the third and fourth to pull to within one.

Dustin DeJohn scored Joshua Martinez on a sac fly to right field in the third and Cody Cain had a solo homerun in the fourth to make the score 4-3 UMHB.

Along with UMHB's seven-run seventh, UMHB had runs in the sixth and ninth innings to round out their scoring.

Colton Brown was 2-for-5 from the plate and Cody Cain also had the one homerun for the Jackets.

Corey Howie recorded the loss for HPU giving up seven runs on 11 hits in six innings of work. Mitchell Marquis, Ethan Ferrel and Garrett Virgin saw time in the seventh and Quinton Poe threw the last two frames for the Jackets.

Howard Payne stands at 3-2 overall and UMHB is now 2-0 overall. The two teams will play a double header on Saturday starting at 12:00 noon.
