Jackets Win Season Opener 6-5

Corey Howie went five innings in the season opener start versus Southwestern

Box Score BROWNWOOD, Texas – The Howard Payne baseball team used a four-run sixth inning to defeat Southwestern University 6-5 in the Yellow Jackets 2014 season opener Tuesday afternoon at Don Shepard Park.

Down 4-2 going into the bottom of the sixth, John Elmore would tripled to right center with the bases loaded scoring Jake Sadler, Kyle Kulczyk and Matthew Daniel. Joshua Martinez then had a sacrifice fly right field to score Elmore. 6-4 Howard Payne.

Howard Payne did get on the scoreboard first in the game when Will Roberts doubled down the left line to bring home Martinez  in the third. Later in the Jackets at bat, Kyle Kulczyk singled to right field to score Will Roberts.

Southwestern scored one in the fourth on a double down the left line and three in the top of the sixth on a single, error and a passed ball.

The Pirates would score one more in the top of the ninth to make the score 6-5 but HPU's Jacob Spivey ,who had come in for the last frame, shut the door on Southwestern to secure the win and claim the save.

Corey Howie would get the no decision in the start throwing five innings allowing one run on three hits. Howie struckout three and walked none. Matthew Parks got the win throwing the 6th, 7th and 8th frames. Parks struckout three and walked none. Spivey recorded the save allowing one run on two hits and striking out one.

Elmore was 1 for 4 from the plate with 3 RBIs. Daniel was 2 for 3 from the plate and Kyle Kulczyk went 2 for 4. Will Roberts and Joshua Martinez each recorded a RBI.

Carl Mueller got the loss for Southwestern. Charlie St. Clair, Zach Lynch and Clayton Sparks each had two hits for the Pirates.

Howard Payne will play next on Feb. 8th and 9th at the University of Dallas. A single game will be on Saturday at 1:00 pm and a double header on Sunday starting at 1:00 pm.
