Jackets With Late Game DH Loses To UTD

Colton Brown was 4-for-6 from the plate with a homerun and 3 RBIs in the DH against UTD

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 RICHARDSON, Texas – The Howard Payne baseball team made last inning pushes but come up short in both games (4-5 and 7-8) of a conference double header with the University of Texas at Dallas Friday afternoon at the UTD Baseball Field.

Howard Payne opened the weekend with a 5-4 loss to UT-Dallas and completed the Friday double header with an 8-7 loss in the night cap. Colton Brown was 4-for-6 from the plate with a homerun and 3 RBIs in the double header for the Yellow Jackets.

In game one, UT-Dallas used a four-run fifth inning to rally for the win after the Jackets had lead 2-1 going into the bottom of the fifth.

After three scoreless frames to open the weekend, UTD opened the scoring in the bottom of the fourth inning scoring on the first of two HPU errors. However, the Yellow Jackets answered with two runs in the top of the fifth, scoring on a Comet error and a double steal.

With the Jackets leading 2-1 in the bottom of the fifth, the UTD tied the game with a solo homerun in the bottom of the inning. Then UTD added three more runs to lead 5-2.

HPU scored a run in each the sixth and seventh innings to draw within a run, but left the game-tying run on third base.

Jacob Spivey went the distance for the Jackets and recorded his first loss of the season (2-1) giving up five runs on eight hits and striking out two. Colton Brown and Cody Cain were each 2-for-3 from the plate for the Jackets.

In game two, UT-Dallas had to rally from a run down late in the game to complete the Friday sweep with an 8-7 win over HPU. With UTD leading 5-1 after three innings, the Yellow Jackets had a five-run fourth to take the lead 6-5.

After HPU took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first, the Comets tied the game in the bottom of the frame with RBI single down the leftfield line to score a runner from second base. UTD then plated four runs in the third inning.

But, the Yellow Jackets would respond with five runs in the top of the next frame, including a two-run, two-out homer by Colton Brown, to grab a 6-5 lead.

UTD knotted the game, 6-6, in the bottom of the fifth with a RBI single to right-center. The Comets then added a pair of runs in the sixth making it an 8-6 advantage.

HPU plated a run in the seventh to draw within a run but didn't move a runner past first base in the final two frames.

Corey Howie got the loss for HPU (0-3) throwing all eight innings giving up eight runs on 12 hits and striking out four. Brown was again 2-for-3 from the plate in game two along with 3 RBIs for Howard Payne. Conner Roberts also drove in two runs.

Howard Payne is now 7-9 overall and 4-7 in league play. UT-Dallas stands at 9-6 overall and 6-4 in conference. The two teams will wrap up the three-game set Saturday at 12 pm
