HPU Ends Regular Season With DH Sweep Of Sul Ross

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ALPINE, Texas - The Howard Payne baseball team posted double header wins 4-3 and 10-1 over Sul Ross State University Saturday afternoon in conference action at Kokernot Field.

The double header wins place the Jackets in sixth in the final American Southwest Conference standings. With Mississippi College not eligible for the ASC tournament, Howard Payne will be the number five seed in the ASC Championship tournament May 7-10 at Concordia University in Austin, Texas. The official tournament bracket and information will be released later this evening.

In game one of the double header, Howard Payne jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first when John Elmore singled,to center field to score Matthew Daniel and Colton Brown.

After a solo homer by Sul Ross in the third, the Jackets added two more runs in the fourth first on a,Cody Cain singled to right field to plate Kyle Kulczyk. Then Joshua,Martinez singled to first base on a bunt and a throwing error by catcher allowed Elmore to score.

Sul Ross scored single runs in the fourth and sixth but the Jackets closer Ethan Ferrel held them off in the final frame to claim the save. Starter Jacob Spivey got the win to improve to 5-4 on the year. Spivey threw 6.0 innings allowing three runs on eight hits while striking out three and walking none.

Colton Brown was 3-for-4 from the plate and John Elmore finished 2-for-2 with two RBI.

In game two, the Jackets jumped on Sul Ross early scoring multiple runs in the first three innings. Kyle Kulczyk would hit a three-run homer to right field to get the Jackets started in the first inning. It was Kulczyk's second homer of the series.

Howard Payne scored four in the second on errors and Sul Ross walking two runs in with the bases loaded. Brett Quakenbush would hit his first homer as a Jacket in the third, a two-run shot to right center. A Colton Brown fielder's choice in the fourth would score Connor Roberts to round out the HPU scoring.

Corey Howie got the win, improving to 4-6 overall, for the Jackets going six innings, striking out seven and walking two in six innings.,

Howard Payne finishes the regular season at,19-21 overall and 16-17 in conference. Sul Ross State stands at 19-21 overall and 15-18 in ASC action. Howard Payne will play next in the ASC tournament.
