KERRVILLE, Texas – The Howard Payne University women's basketball team got a layup with 15 seconds remaining to claim a 61-59 victory over Schreiner University Saturday evening at Stephens Family Arena.
With Schreiner leading by six, Howard Payne used an 8-0 run with under two minutes to play to take a 61-59 lead with 15 seconds remaining.
The Lady Jackets led 31-25 at the half shooting 44% from the field. Schreiner was just 2-for-11 from the free-throw line in the first half.
A 6-0 run by Schreiner to start the 3rd quarter tied the game at 31-31 three minutes into the second half. After a strong 3rd quarter for Schreiner, the Lady Mountaineers built 55-49 advantage with five minutes to play in the fourth.
Still down six with two minutes remaining, the Jackets scored six straight sparked by full court pressure to tie the game at 59-59 with 1:46 left in the game.
With the game tied with 17 seconds remaining,
Danyel Bradley got a steal at halfcourt and made the layup to give Howard Payne a 61-59 lead. The Lady Jackets denied Schreiner a good look at the basket to claim the two point victory.
Danyel Bradley finished with a team high 22 points along with six rebounds and a game high five steals and four assists.
Sarahi Castillo followed with 19 points and six rebounds.
Jessica Galaviz grabbed a six rebounds.
Schreiner was led by Kelsie Jackson with a game high 24 points. Dyamond Puebia recorded a game high 12 rebounds.
Howard Payne is now 3-5 overall on the year. Schreiner falls to 1-7 overall. The Lady Jackets will play next on December 15th t Division I UT-San Antonio starting at 7:00 pm.
