Lady Jackets Lose At D-I UTSA

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The Howard Payne University women's basketball team made 13 buckets from behind the arc but would go on to lose 106-65 to Division I University of Texas at San Antonio Tuesday evening in non-conference action.

The Lady Jackets forced 22 UT-San Antonio turnovers but were outrebounded by the Roadrunners 57-21 in the game. UTSA dominated points in the paint 62-8 over Howard Payne.

It was a close first quarter with both teams shooting red-hot from the field. The Lady Jackets shot 53% from the field and hit 7 of their 13 three-pointers in the first quarter. UTSA would connect on 82% of their shots in the first quarter.

UTSA opened up the game in the second quarter outscoring HPU 16-8 to lead by fourteen (48-34) at the half. It continued to be all UTSA in the second half leading to the 106-65 final.

The 13 three-pointers by Howard Payne was the most allowed by UTSA in the program's history. The Lady Jackets also shot well from the free-throw line connecting on 16 of 18 attempts.

Danyel Bradley led HPU with 23 points and a game high three steals. Bradley was 4-for-8 from behind the arc and 11-for-12 from the free-throw line. Micah Cisneroz followed 13 points off the bench and Yessenia Cazares added 12 points.

UTSA was led by Tesha Smith with a game high 29 points along with 12 rebounds. Sara Anastasieska had 15 points, Akunna Elonu had 14 and Dempsey Thornton added 13. Kasia Kiejdrowska grabbed a game high 14 rebounds.

Howard Payne is now 3-6 overall on the year and UTSA stands at 3-4 overall. The Lady Jackets will play next this Friday at Millsaps College in Jackson, Miss. The game will have a 3:00 pm start time.
