BROWNWOOD, Texas - The Howard Payne baseball team could not overcome an eight run fourth by McMurry University dropping the non-conference game 9-6 Tuesday afternoon at Don Shepard Park.
McMurry would score eight runs on seven hits in the fourth to take an 8-1 advantage. The Yellow Jackets would scoring one run in the fifth, three in the eighth and one in the ninth.
Howard Payne got on the scoreboard first with a solo homer to left field by
Micah Thompson, his first at HPU, in the Jackets first at bat.,After the eight run fourth for McMurry, Howard Payne scored one in the fifth on a Brett,Quackenbush doubled down the left line to score
Kevin Leis, who had reached on a walk.
In the eighth,
Jake Sadler reached on a fielder's choice allowing
Micah Thompson to score. The Jacob,Cowling doubled down the right field line to score
Walker Dailey who had pitch ran for
Cody Brown. Ball four would get pass the McMurry catcher walking
Trey Franks and allowing
Jake Sadler to score from third on a wild pitch making it 9-5 McMurry. Jackets would get their final run in the,ninth when
Matthew Daniel singled up the middle to plate
Joshua Martinez.
Jake Sadler and
Brett Quackenbush each had three hits and a RBI for Howard Payne.
Joshua Martinez and
Micah Thompson each would add two hits to the 13 total for the Jackets.
Dustin Kelver got the loss in the start going 3.2 innings and striking out four and walking two.
Howard Payne is now 12-16 overall and McMurry stands at 24-5 overall. The Jackets will have a conference series this weekend at home versus Concordia University Texas. There will be a single game on Friday at 2:00 pm and a double header on Saturday starting at 1:00 pm.
