BROWNWOOD, Texas – The Howard Payne University football team fell to 0-2 in American Southwest Conference play with a 59-10 loss to #3 ranked University of Mary Hardin-Baylor Saturday afternoon.
Down 49-7 at the half, the Yellow Jackets would hold the high powered offense of Mary Hardin-Baylor to just 10 points in the second half and scoreless in the third quarter.
With UMHB leading 35-0 midway through the second quarter,
Caisson Montieth found
Ivy Smith for an 83 yard touchdown reception to make the game 35-7 after the
Jason Disney extra-point.
After a scoreless third quarter for both teams,
Jason Disney connected on a 31 yard field goal to make the game 49-10 with 12:32 left in the game. The field goal capped an 11 play, 66 yard drive that took 3:44 off the clock for the Jackets.
Caisson Montieth finished the game 6 of 17 passing for 145 yards, one TD and one interception. Montieth also had 26 yards rushing on seven attempts followed by
Justin Acosta with 20 yards on four attempts and
Shannon Warren with 20 yards.
Ivy Smith led the Jackets in receiving with the one TD catch for 83 yards. With Acosta adding 28 yards on three receptions.
Jason Disney again led all tacklers with 11, seven solo. He was followed by
Dylan Hudson with 10 total and
Patrick Hunt with seven. Jesse Pashal and
Isaac Sanchez each shared a sack.
UMHB shared its QB duties with Blake Jackson going 5 of 6 for 95 yards and two TDs and Kyle Jones with 92 yards on 10 of 16 passing and a TD. Duane Thompson had 10 carries for 54 yards and a TD. Keith Reineke led the UMHB defense with nine tackles and a forced fumble.
Howard Payne is now 0-5 overall and 0-2 in American Southwest Conference action. #3 UMHB stands at 5-0 overall and 2-0 in league play. The Jackets will travel to Abilene, Texas next week to play ranked Hardin-Simmons University. It will be a 1:30 pm kickoff.
