BROWNWOOD, Texas – The Howard Payne University women's basketball team held Concordia University Texas to just 28 points in the second half to post a 67-65 conference victory Thursday evening.
With Concordia shooting 55% from the field in the first half, the Lady Jackets held the Tornados to 31% shooting in the second half to record their 10th consecutive victory.
Howard Payne would have to play from behind early in the game with Concordia jumping out to a 9-0 lead.
Down 24-13 after the first quarter, the Lady Jackets battled back to take the lead midway through the second and would trail 37-35 at the half.
HPU regained the lead for a short time in the third but trailed 51-48 going into the fourth quarter. The HPU defense was relentless in the final quarter as the Lady Jackets held the Tornados to just 14 points to post the 67-65 victory.
HPU was able to keep CTX off the free-throw line allowing just nine attempts (4-of-9) for the game. HPU finished 10-of-16 from the charity stripe.
Danyel Bradley finished with 27 points, six rebounds, four assists and three steals.
Sarahi Castillo recorded a team high 10 rebounds and a game high seven blocks for the Lady Jackets.
Concordia's Isis Johnson had 22 first half points but the Lady Jackets would hold her to just six in the second half. Johnson also grabbed a game high 14 rebounds. Kayla Strobel had 17 points and Jaela Dejean followed with 12.
Howard Payne is now 15-8 overall and 9-3 in American Southwest Conference action. Concordia is 11-11 overall and 3-9 in conference play. The Lady Jackets will play at home on Saturday at 1:00 pm versus the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor.
