BROWNWOOD, Texas - Howard Payne University's
Matthew Daniel hit a two-run homer to give the Yellow Jackets a 5-4 walk-off victory over Schreiner University Friday afternoon at Don Shepard Park.
Down 4-3 going into the bottom of the ninth,
Brandon Garrett reached on a single through the left side. Then it was
Matthew Daniel sending a shot over the left center fence to give the Yellow Jackets the 5-4 victory over Mountaineers.
The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the fourth when, with runners at the corners,
David Groves' bunt single to the pitcher scored
Will Roberts from third.
Schreiner scored two in the top of the sixth but the Jackets responded in the bottom of the inning with two to remain in the lead 3-2. A
Cody Cain single to left field brought home
Benjamin Lewis then with the bases loaded a
Blake Laney ground out allowed Cain to score from third.
Schreiner then scored two in the eighth before the Daniel two-run homerun for the walk-off victory in the ninth.
Cain was 2-for-4 from the plate with one RBI, six other Jackets recorded a hit.
Kyle Ramon went 5.2 innings in the start allowing two runs on three hits and striking out eight in the no decision.
Michael Cannon threw one inning in relief allowing two hits.
Adrian Acosta got the win going the final 2.1 innings. Acosta allowed two runs on three hits with two strikeouts.
The Jackets and Mountaineers will continue their weekend series with a double header on Saturday starting at 12:00 noon.
