BROWNWOOD, Texas - The Howard Payne University baseball team splits with Schreiner University 10-1 and 6-8 Saturday at Don Shepard Park.

After the Yellow Jacket walkoff win on Friday, the Saturday split for Howard Payne give them the weekend series 2-1 over Schreiner.

Howard Payne used a six run first inning to cruise to a 10-1 victory. It started when Cody Brown was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to score Blake Laney. Then a Zachary Rodriquez fielders choice plated Brandon Garrett. Cody Cain tripled to left field to score three and a David Groves double to right center brought home Cain.

Later, a Laney sacrifice fly to center field scored Cain in the third to increase the HPU lead to 7-0.

Schreiner scored one in the top of the sixth but the Jackets answered in the bottom of the inning with three more runs. Rodriquez hit a two-run homerun to left center and then Walker Dailey walked with the bases loaded to score Seth Dohrman.

Cody Cain was 3-for-4 from the plate with three RBIs for HPU. Brandon Garrett, Will Roberts, Zachary Rodriquez and David Groves each finished with two hits. Tyler Colburn got the win in the start going five frames and allowing just five hits, striking out four and walking none. Jonathan George and Matthew Parks each saw one inning in relief.

In game two, Schreiner would score two runs in each of the first three innings to lead 6-0. The Jackets battled back scoring one run in each of the next three. Schreiner scored two more in the seventh to lead 8-3.

Howard Payne rallied again scoring on a Laney single up the middle in the eighth and two in the bottom of the ninth on a Laney walk and Garrett hit by pitch with the bases loaded. After a fly out to center field, HPU ended the inning with the bases loaded for the second time in the game to lose 8-6.

Blake Laney and Cody Cain both recorded two hits in the game. Laney finished with 2 RBIs. Shawn Brody got the loss in the start allowing six runs on nine hits in three innings of work. Chad Anders saw 4.2 innings in relief. allowing two runs on five hits. Broadman Adams faced on batter and Dalton Land finished the game allowing one hit and striking out three in one inning of action.

Howard Payne is 2-1 to start the season and Schreiner now stands at 1-5 overall. The Jackets will play next on Tuesday, Feb. 23rd in Brownwood versus McMurry University.
