AUSTIN, Texas - The Howard Payne University baseball team dropped a non-conference match-up 11-5 with #20 Concordia University Chicago Saturday afternoon.
It was a five run top of the ninth for Concordia Chicago that shut the door on Howard Payne's late game push. The five runs put Concordia Chicago up 11-3 going into the Jackets final at bat. HPU would get two runs but fall 11-5 in the end.
The Yellow Jackets stranded 10 runners in the game and committed three errors in the field.
With the game tied at 2-2 going into fifth, Concordia Chicago scored two in the top of the inning, one in the sixth and one in the eighth to gain a 6-2 lead. The Jackets responded with a run in the bottom of the eighth on a
Cliff Lunceford tripled to right field to score
Colby Mica, who had pinch ran for
Cody Brown.
After the five runs in the ninth by Concordia Chicago, Howard Payne scored its two runs on a Matthew Daniel two RBI single up the middle plating
Brandon Garrett Blake Laney.
Brent Quackenbush and
Matthew Daniel each had two hits for the Jackets.
Kyle Ramon got the loss in the start allowing four runs on five hits and walking three in five innings of work.
Shawn Brody saw two innings in relief. Kyle Moseley and
Adrian Acosta each recorded an inning of work.
Howard Payne is now 6-7 overall and #20 Concordia Chicago stands at 10-4 on the year. The Jackets will play next on March 24-25 at the University of the Ozarks in Clarksville, Arkansas.
