BROWNWOOD, Texas - The Howard Payne University baseball team split a double header with Sul Ross State University 11-4 and 5-15 Saturday afternoon in conference action at Don Shepard Park.
Howard Payne and Sul Ross State combined for 35 runs as the teams split their doubleheader Saturday 11-4 Howard Payne and 15-5 Sul Ross.
The Yellow Jackets tallied 11 hits on their way to an 11-4 bruising of the Lobos in the first contest. Sul Ross did posted 10 hits against two different HPU pitchers, but the Jackets defense played solid to hold the Lobos in check.
The Jackets took a 2-0 lead into the second inning on a Lunceford single up the middle to score

Howard Payne then pounced with eight runs over the second and third to take a commanding 10-1 advantage.Â
Sul Ross added two runs in the fourth to narrow the margin to 10-3.

Joshua Martinez to score from third for an 11-3 lead. The Jackets would go on to post the 11-4 victory.
Noah Payne was 3-for-4 from the plate with three RBIs for the Jackets.

Adrian Acosta improved to 3-0 on the season with the win in the start. Acosta allowed three runs on eight hits in six innings of work.
Jonathan George threw the last frame allowing one run on two hits.
In game two, the Jackets seemed to be picking off where they left off by jumping out to an early 5-2 lead after three innings. After a single run by the Lobos in the top of the first, a Brett Quackenbush two-run homer to right field made it 2-1 Jackets.Â
Sul Ross then tied the game up at 2-2 in the third till in the bottom of the inningÂ
Cody Brown's three-run homer to right field made the score 5-2 Howard Payne.
Sul Ross then exploded with a 12-run payload scattered over the final three frames to lock down the 15-5 victory.
Noah Payne and
Matthew Daniel each recorded two hits for the Jackets.

Howard Payne stands at 11-9 overall and 7-5 in American Southwest Conference action. Sul Ross State is now 14-13 overall and 7-5 in league play. The Jackets will play next on Tuesday at Southwestern Assemblies of God University in Waxahachie, Texas.Â
