WAXAHACHIE, Texas - The Howard Payne University baseball team defeated Southwestern Assemblies of God University 7-2 in a non-conference matchup Tuesday afternoon.
Howard Payne scored seven runs on eight hits while the Jacket pitching staff held Southwestern Assemblies to just three hits.
Howard Payne got the scoring going in the second plating two runs. A Walker Dailey bunt single with the bases loaded allowed
Cliff Lunceford to score from third. Then, Noah Payne hit into double play but
Blake Laney was able to score.
SAGU responded with two runs in the fourth to tie the game at 2-2, but the Jackets regained the lead right back in the top of the next frame on aÂ

Howard Payne would get three insurance runs in the seventh on a
Brett Quackenbush ground out to score Payne and a
Blake Laney 2 RBI single up the middle, HPU tacked on one more run in the ninth on a
Cody Brown RBI single to right field. 7-2 Jackets.
After
Shawn Brody went 4.0 innings in the start,
Nathan Weyrauch picked up his first win of the season throwing 2.0 innings, allowing no hits and striking out four. Brody had three strikeouts.
Jonathan George saw two innings of work and
Zach Moseley threw the final frame, each not giving up a hit.
Will Roberts finished 2-for-4 from the plate for HPU. Five other Jackets recorded a hit and four HPU batters were hit by a pitch.
Howard Payne is now 12-9 overall and SAGUÂ stands at 13-29 on the year. The Jackets will be in action this weekend at Arlington Baptist College in Fort Worth, Texas for a non-conference weekend series.
