SHERMAN, Texas - The Howard Payne University defense held Austin College scoreless in the second half but the Yellow Jackets failed to put together a late game drive to lose 19-17 to the Kangaroos Saturday afternoon.
The Howard Payne University football team for the second week in a row have a late game opportunity to win the game and come up short. Led by senior linebacker
Jason Disney with nine tackles, six solo and a fumble recovery, the Yellow Jacket defense buckled down in the second half keeping the Kangaroo offense off the scoreboard.
The start of the game did not go well for the Jackets with HPU fumbling an Austin College kickoff after a Roos 37-yard field goal. Austin College went on to score after the Jacket turnover and missed the extra point to make the game 9-0 with 10 minutes left in the first quarter.
The Jacket defense held AC to a 43 yard field goal toward the end of the first quarter before
Jason Disney later connected on a 38 yard field goal to put HPU on the scoreboard. The field goal capped a Jacket drive that went 44 yards on 14 plays taking 7:43 off the clock, 12-3 Austin College with 10:46 left in the second. AC added one more score before the half on a one-yard run with 2:22 remaining, 19-3 AC at the break.
While the defense was holding the Roos in the second half,
Caisson Montieth used a 31-yard run to the Austin College six yard line to later setup a one-yard TD run that he would take in. The extra point by Disney made the game 19-10 AC with 4:56 left in the third.
In the fourth, Montieth connected with
Derrick Williams on a beautiful 52 yard TD pass with 8:36 left to pull the Jackets to within two, 19-17.
JT Estes would then pick off Austin College in the endzone on the Roos next drive setting up the opportunity for the Jackets to put together a game winning drive.
Howard Payne would be forced to punt and Austin College was able to run out the clock to claim the game 19-17.
Montieth was 14 of 26 passing for 138 yards and a TD, he also had 11 rushes for 70 yards a TD.
Justin Acosta had 16 carries for 73 yards.
Derrick Williams had three catches for 95 yards and a TD.
Along with Disney's team high nine tackles,
JT Estes,
Patrick Hunt and Justin Ascuncion each added six tackles. Estes added two tackles for loss with the interception.
Britt Boler recorded one sack.
Austin College was led by Woodyard with 20 of 31 passing for 232 yards, Jones with 10 carries for 57 yards and Enah with a game high 12 tackles.
Howard Payne is now 0-2 on the year and Austin College stands at 1-1 overall. The Jackets will play on the road next Saturday at Wayland Baptist University in Plainview, Texas starting at 2:00 pm
