ALPINE, Texas – The Howard Payne University baseball team split a non-conference double header at Sul Ross State University 1-8 and 15-10 Friday evening.
Howard Payne jumped on Sul Ross State early in game two of the double header scoring six runs in top of the first inning.
After
Joshua Gerig scored on a wild pitch,
Benjamin Lewis doubled to left center to score
Jacob Salazar and
Noah Payne. Then
Brendon Clanton doubled to plate
Cliff Lunceford and
David Groves singled to right field to score Clanton. Finally,
Joshua Gerig reached on a throwing error by second baseman allowing Groves to score.
Sul Ross scored four on a grand slam in the bottom of the inning to make the score 6-4 HPU.
HPU scored four more runs over the next two innings on a Clanton 2 RBI double, a Groves RBI single to center field and a Salazar RBI single through the right side. 10-4 HPU
Each team added runs over the next four innings with the Jackets winning the battle 15-10 at the end of seven.
Salazar and Clanton each finished 3-for-3 at the plate with three RBIs.

Benjamin Lewis and
David Groves each recorded two hits in the game.
Xavier Haines got the victory in relief for HPU going 2.2 innings allowing one run on just two hits and striking out two.
Chad Anders got the no decision in the start going 3.1 innings allowing six runs on six hits and striking out two.
Zach Moseley threw the final frame allowing three runs on three hits.
The Jackets dropped game one of the double header 1-8 allowing 14 Lobo hits. Sul Ross jumped out to a 5-0 lead before Howard Payne got on the scoreboard in the top of the 4th on a
Bailey Smith double to plate
Cliff Lunceford.
Bailey Smith led HPU going 3-for-3 at the plate with 1 RBI.
Jonathan George got the loss in the start going 3.0 innings allowing six runs on 10 hits.
Nathan Weyrauch threw the final three frames of the seven inning game allowing two runs on four hits.
Howard Payne is now 2-3 overall and Sul Ross State stands at 5-4 on the year. The two teams will finish out the weekend four-game series with a double header on Saturday starting at 1:00 pm. Be sure to follow Jacket baseball on Twitter @HPUhardball.
