ABILENE, Texas - The Howard Payne University baseball team took game one of its header at McMurry University 5-2 to claim the conference series 2-1 after dropping the second game of the day.
On Friday, the Yellow Jackets took the series opener 8-6 and then used 12 hits to win game one of the Saturday double header 5-2. HPU starter
Jonathan George (1-3) was stellar on the mound allowing two runs on just two hits in six innings of work.
Zach Moseley threw the final frame to pick up a league best 10th save on the year.
Noah Payne led the offensive charge for the Jackets going 3-for-3 at the plate with 2 RBIs.
Brett Quackenbush was 2-for-3 at the plate with 2 RBIs and
Cyrus Coleman and
Cliff Lunceford each added two hits.
Quackenbush got the HPU offense started in the third with a singled down the right field line to score
Noah Payne and
Joshua Gerig. 2-1 HPU.
In the fifth, a Noah Payne sac bunt brought home
Cliff Lunceford, 3-2 HPU. Then in the sixth,
Joshua Gerig walked with the bases loaded to bring home
Cyrus Coleman and later in the inning a
Noah Payne single allowed Lunceford to score, 5-2 HPU.
The second game of the double header was all McMurry with the War Hawks totaling 17 hits in the 20-1 game final.
The Jackets scored in the sixth on a Jay Holland double down the left field line bringing home
Chris Byrd.
With Jackets committing six errors,
Kyle Ramon (1-2) recorded the loss in the start allowing nine runs on five hits and striking out three.
Nathan Weyrauch,
Chad Anders,
Seth Owen and Joshua O'Connor each saw action in relief.
Howard Payne now stands at 17-13 overall and 10-8 in American Southwest Conference action. McMurry is now 12-22 overall and 6-12 league play. The Yellow Jackets will play next at home on Tuesday, April 18th in a non-conference double header with Arlington Baptist University starting at 1:00 pm. All admission to Don Shepard Park is free.
