JACKSON, Mississippi - The Howard Payne University women's basketball team held Birmingham-Southern College to just 19 points in the second half to post a 57-55 victory Sunday at the Millsaps College Tournament.
After allowing 27 points in the first quarter, the Howard Payne defense buckled down allowing no more than 12 points over the next three periods. Holding Birmingham-Southern to just 37.7% shooting from the field, the Lady Jackets also forced 21 turnovers while committing 13 themselves in the game.
Down five, 48-43 to start the fourth, the Lady Jackets would outscore BSC 14-7 in the final period to claim the 57-55 win.
Anastasia Willis led HPU with 12 points and six rebounds.
Caprica Brooks followed with 10 points, five rebounds and four steals.
Salina Ali dished out a game-high four assists.
BSC was led by Emilee Olsen with 15 points and 14 rebounds and Kaitlyn Hogan with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Howard Payne is now 2-4 overall on the year and Birmingham-Southern stands at 1-4 overall. Howard Payne will play next on Tuesday traveling to Schreiner University in Kerrville, Texas. It will be a 7:00 pm start time.
