BROWNWOOD, Texas - The Howard Payne University baseball team held Schreiner University to just seven total hits in 8-1 and 3-0 Yellow Jacket victories Wednesday afternoon at Don Shepard Park.

Howard Payne had 16 total hits at the plate while six Yellow Jacket pitchers held Schreiner to seven hits for the day.

Seth Owen in the start and Jonathan George in relief combined on the mound to hold Schreiner to just one hit in an 8-1 game one victory. Owen went 4.0 innings in the start allowing just one run on one hit striking out two. George threw 3.0 innings allowing no runs, no hits and striking out one for the save.

The Jackets used a two-run second inning to open up a 2-1 advantage then later secured a comfortable lead with a four-run fifth. HPU added two more runs in the next frame to claim the 8-1 victory.

Jay Holland, Jacob Salazar and JW Ledbetter each recorded two hits at the plate for HPU.  Holland had three RBIs.

In game two, the Jackets scored single runs in the second, third and fourth innings. In the second, Cliff Lunceford reached on a fielder's choice allowing Jacob Salazar to score. In the third, a Blake Null single to left center plated Noah Payne, 2-0 Jackets. Then in the fourth, a Noah Payne sac fly to center field scored Bailey Smith. 

Five different Jackets recorded hits in game two. Dylan Vilaros posted the win in relief throwing 3.0 innings allowing two hits and striking out two. Preston Newman went 4.0 innings in the start allowing three hits and striking out five. Brenden Clanton threw one frame striking out two with no hits. Evan Rodriguez threw the final frame allowing one hit and picking up the save.

Howard Payne is now 2-0 overall and Schreiner falls to 1-4 on the year. The Yellow Jackets will play next at home on Sat. Feb. 17th versus the University of Dallas in a double header starting at 12:00 noon.
