BROWNWOOD, Texas – The Howard Payne University women's basketball team's defense shined as the Lady Jackets defeated Concordia University Texas 61-35 Saturday afternoon at the Brownwood Coliseum.
The Howard Payne defense was stellar all game holding Concordia to a season low 35 points. Concordia shot just 19.4% from behind the arc and from the field 21.2% total for the game.
The Lady Jackets held the Tornados to just three second quarter points to lead 32-14 at the half. HPU forced 19 Concordia turnovers and out rebounded CTX 47-33 in the game on the way to the 61-35 final.
HPU's Chesley Harris led all scorers with 20 points and five assists.
Anastasia Willis followed with 16 points and six rebounds.
Caprica Brooks grabbed a game high nine rebounds and
Chelsi Woodard grabbed seven rebounds along with five blocks off the bench.
Concordia was led by Lindsey Carter with 11 points. No other Tornados scored in double digits.
Howard Payne is now 7-13 overall and 4-7 in American Southwest Conference action. Concordia Texas stands at 7-13 overall and 3-8 in league play. The Lady Jackets will play next on Saturday, Feb. 2 at Sul Ross State in Alpine, Texas at 1:00 pm.
