BROWNWOOD, Texas - With a minute remaining, the Howard Payne University men's basketball team rallied from an eleven point deficit in a 79-78 loss to Southwestern University Saturday afternoon.
With the score 75-64 Southwestern with 59 seconds left in the game, the Yellow Jackets put together a run sparked by great defensive play to give themselves a chance to win the game at the buzzer.

Luke Cox was fouled while shooting a three-pointer with six seconds left in the game. He then hit 2 of 3 free-throws to pull the Jackets to within one, 79-78.Â

Talen Davis stole a Southwestern pass at halfcourt and the long distance shot by
Javaris Jones would not fall ending 79-78 for Southwestern.
HPU out rebounded Southwestern 44-41 but it was the Pirates 43.8% (14 of 32) shooting from behind the arc that was a factor in the game. The Jackets connected on 5 of 27 three-pointers (18.5%) in the game.
Tyrell Thompson led the Jackets with 13 points on 5 of 6 shooting from the field, he also grabbed six rebounds.
Jase Miguez followed with 13 points and
Talen Davis added 10.
Joshua Taylor grabbed a team high 10 rebounds and Jayden Balou finished with four assists.
Southwestern was led by Brandon Alexander with 26 points, he was 6 of 10 from behind the arc.
Howard Payne is now 1-2 overall and Southwestern stands at 2-2 overall. The Jackets wil play next at Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas on Nov 25th at 7:00 pm.
