ALPINE, Texas - The Howard Payne University women's basketball team defeated Schreiner University 66-59 on day one of the ASC-SCAC Crossover hosted by Sul Ross State University.

Down by seven just into the start of the second quarter, the Lady Jackets rallied and outscored the Mountaineers 23-8 to gain the lead that they would not relinquish. 

With HPU leading 50-39 going into the fourth quarter, Schreiner put together a run but the Lady Jackets were able to hold in the 66-59 final.

The Lady Jacket defense held Scheiner to just 32.8% shooting from the field in the game while forcing 26 turnovers.

Lily Janek led HPU with 15 points sparked by four three-pointers. Janek also grabbed six rebounds and three steals. Bria Neal followed with 10 points and five rebounds. Anastasia Willis added a game high 11 rebounds along with four assists and eight points. Mallory Garica hit 3 of 6 three-pointers off the bench for the Lady Jackets.

Zahra Cross led Schreiner with 16 points and Yasmine Arogunjo followed with 11 points.

Howard Payne improves to 3-2 overall and Schreiner falls to 0-5 on the year. The Lady Jackets will play the University of St. Thomas on Sunday at 1:00 pm on day two of the crossover.
