Brownwood, Texas: The Yellow Jackets split a double header against visiting Schreiner University by scores of 12-11 in favor of the Mountaineers in game one and a 9-2 victory for Howard Payne.
Game One
The scoring match got off to a quick start when the Mountaineers scored 2 runs in the 1
st. The Yellow Jackets answered though with 1 run in the 1
st thanks to an
RJ Roberts double that scored
Joshua Gerig and then an 8 run 2
nd inning.
The 2
nd inning scoring show was started by a
Cliff Lunceford rbi triple then was followed by an rbi single by
Joshua Gerig. There were two more rbi triples in the 2
nd by
Noah Payne and
Jacob Rodriguez.
Schreiner got to work though, scoring 1 run in the 4
th and then 8 in the 5
th to retake the lead.
Howard Payne battled back. But came up one run short in a 12-11 final.
Jacob Rodriguez led the Jackets at the plate going 2-4 with a triple and 3 runs batted in.
Joshua Gerig also added 2 hits and 2 runs batted in of his own.
Preston Newman got the start for the Jackets tossing 3 innings giving up 2 earned runs and striking out 1.
Ben Schardt got the loss appearing in 1/3 of an inning and giving up 4 runs, 1 earned.
Game Two
The second game started off much like the first with Schreiner going ahead early in the 2
nd inning 1-0.
The Jackets put up a 9 spot in the 3
rd inning and kept the Mountaineers at bay for this rest of the contest only allowing one more run the rest of the way. The final score stayed at 9-2.
The Yellow Jacket hitters were led by
Nolyn Box who turned in a 1-4 performance knocking in 2 runs and
Sam Bosher who went 1-3 with a double and 2 rbis.
Cade Varrichio also turned in a great performance finishing 2-3 with a double and an rbi.
Graham White started this contest on the mound throwing 2.2 innings while giving up just 1 run and striking out 3.
Johnny Cravey got the win for the Jackets tossing 1/3 of an inning striking out that lone batter with the bases loaded.
The Yellow Jackets, who were supposed to be on the road this week, are actually staying home as rain is leading the Wildcats to travel to Don Shepard Park. The weekend series will start with a double header on Friday. 1
st pitch will be at Noon followed by the second game at 3:00.
