San Angelo, Texas - The Yellow Jacket Baseball Club lost the first game of the American Southwest Conference Tournament to LeTourneau University by a score of 11-3. They also ended their season in the elimination game by a score of 8-4 to Louisiana College.
Game One
Howard Payne committed four errors in the first contest, leading to double digit runs scored for LETU.
Noah Payne led Howard Payne at the plate going 5-5 with two doubles, while adding another triple to his impressive resume. Jacob Salazar also added a home run and two RBIs.
Bryson Lyro got the loss for Howard Payne tossing 4 innings, giving up eight hits and five runs while striking out one. Zach Moseley also threw an inning giving up two hits, three runs, none earned, while striking out one. Graham White ended the game with 1 inning, striking out one.
Game Two
Howard Payne's season ended after an elimination game loss against Louisiana College.
The Wildcats jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the 1st inning. The Yellow Jackets were able to scrap one run across in the 2nd to make it a 3-1 game.
LC then added 4 runs in the 4th inning to extend their lead to 7-1. HPU put up three of their own in the 5th thanks to an Joshua Gerig single that scored Cliff Lunceford and Noah Payne, then a balk that brought home Jacob Rodriguez cutting the deficit to 7-4.
LC would add another run and keep Howard Payne scoreless over the final few innings to bring the season to an end with an 8-4 score.
Jacob Rodriguez, Cliff Lunceford and Jacob Salazar all went 2-4 on the night with Lunceford and Rodriguez crossing the plate once. Joshua Gerig added a 1-4 contest with 2 RBIs.
Preston Newman got the start and the loss tossing 3.1 innings giving up six hits, six runs and striking out one. Seth Owen also added 2.2 innings giving up five hits and only one run while striking out four. Brenden Clanton also tossed a scoreless 9th inning, giving up one hit.
Howard Payne ends their season with a final record of 26-16 overall, 17-4 in the American Southwest Conference play which put them at 1st place in the regular season standings. This is the first time the Howard Payne Baseball Program has surpassed the 25-win mark since the 90's.
